The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella enteritidis infections in the United States. The outbreak is linked to the consumption of shell eggs distributed by a company in California. So far, at least 38 cases have been reported across 12 states, with several hospitalizations.

The investigation is focused on August Egg Company, located in Hilmar, California. The company announced a voluntary recall of approximately 1.7 million dozen eggs, which were processed between May 1 and May 23, 2024, and distributed to grocery stores and supermarkets in Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington.

In an official statement, August Egg Company said:“August Egg Company of Hilmar, CA, is voluntarily recalling 1,700,000 dozen shell eggs processed at our California facility and sold to various grocery store customers. This recall was initiated due to possible contamination with Salmonella enteritidis, which poses a health risk. With this in mind, we believe it is appropriate, as a precaution, to conduct this voluntary recall since consumers may still have these eggs in their homes.”

The recalled products include several brands sold under private labels of retail chains. Consumers are advised to immediately discard any eggs included in the recall list and check the lot codes printed on the packaging.

The FDA and CDC continue to monitor the situation and warn of symptoms of Salmonella infection, such as fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, which can appear 6 to 72 hours after consuming contaminated food.

The investigation is ongoing to confirm the exact source of contamination and to prevent the outbreak from spreading further.
